Food for Thought

Something I heard my mom say in church today that really stuck with me is:

“Without a goal, discipline is nothing but self-punishment.”

After hearing that, it was hard on me to focus for the rest of the sermon. Oh how many times have I disciplined myself in life. I have told myself “no” or restricted myself from being able to go and do for the sake of a obtaining a goal. That’s good right? No self-punishment there. But what about the times where I did not see that goal through. The times I refused dessert because I needed to lose a few pounds but didn’t go to the gym to lose those pounds. Or the times I wouldn’t let myself get online in until I wrote 5,000 words. Days or weeks would go by without putting 1 word on paper. And let’s not forget the times I put money away for savings, passing over all kinds of things I wanted only to turn around later and spend what I saved and then some. If only I had made small purchases here and there, I would have been able to save it versus having nothing to show for it at all.

What happened to my discipline?

I had the discipline … check. I had the goal in sight … check. I simply lacked the confidence of seeing my goal come to fruition. Instead I got caught up in a momentary fix, if you will, and let my life-long aspirations slip further away. I let my discipline, my restrictions consume me to the point that I lost the energy and assurance of obtaining my goal.

Things get in the way sometimes. People get in the way other times. One thing to keep in mind is that if we keep sight of OUR goals, we can avoid the effects of self-punishment in the long run.

Blessings & Prosperity!
