Putting It Off
I am sure you have heard the quote “Don’t put off for tomorrow what you can do today.” More than likely, there are plenty of things that we can do today, but if they don’t get done until tomorrow, we’ll be okay. Car needs washing. Pet needs to go to the vet. Carpet needs vacuuming. Oh, what the heck…it can be done tomorrow. I’m sure I’m not the only one guilty of this. What’s another day, right?
But what about those things that can’t wait until tomorrow?
Pablo Picasso said, “Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.”
There are a plethora of visions and dreams inside of me I want to see take place in my lifetime. I cannot imagine dying leaving them undone. I’ve lived to see not one but two novels in bookstores. I want to see more of the words in me bettering lives univer(SOUL)ly every story, not just on shelves, but on the small and big screen as well. I want to see so many more things birthed from me. However, if I do not take action, I take the risk of leaving this earth with many of those could’ve-been accomplishments leaving right along with me.
Take a moment to look over all of the things you had on your list to do today, this week, or this month. Did you join that gym? Did you start that business? Did you buy that house? What about that vacation? Were there plans that had you put forth a little bit of effort, you’d be closer to executing before the year is out? Can you see a pattern in what you wanted to do, didn’t do, and decided not to do because you didn’t do? What caused you not to scratch them off your list. If you accomplished some of the tasks on your list, what efforts did you put forth to make them happen? What changes can you make in order to be more disciplined in the days, weeks, and months to come?
No one can help you transform your dreams into reality until you get busy first.
It’s time to stop watching others live their dreams while you sit around and put things off until tomorrow. Reasons to why you haven’t done it is nothing more than tolerated excuses. Whatever dream you have inside of you will never see the light of day if you continue to put off for tomorrow what you can and should get done today. The further back you shove something under the shelf while placing new things in front of it, the harder it’ll be to reach without greater effort. And at some point, you might even forget it’s back there.
What are you not willing to die having left undone?
What’s stopping you from taking action today, right now?
Don’t go another day with the same it-can-get-done-tomorrow mindset.
Blues Notes: Some things (dreams, opportunities, etc.) are taken from us because we take too long to do them. Time slips us by because we spend too much time doing things that do not matter, things that don’t elevate us to the next level. Don’t let time or life slip you by. It is a choice, after all.
